A day out in Dublin: a journey to Howth
10:28:00
During a holiday in Dublin with my friends one day we decided to do a day trip outside the city and we heard about a suburb in the North Side of Dublin bay.
Far away in the west the sun was setting and the last glow of all too fleeting day lingered lovingly on sea and strand, on the proud promontory of dear old Howth guarding as ever the waters of the bay…

Howth is a little fishermen village and it is the perfect place if you love nature, stunning landscapes, and hiking.

It is pretty easy to reach from Dublin and there are two alternatives. The fastest is to hop on the DART suburban rail system from the city centre to Howth Station in about half an hour or to take the 31/a or 31/b bus from Talbot Street in the city centre which takes around one hour.
We choose the cheapest way and we took the bus which left us on a hill from where we walked through a path on the cliffs. It is an easy walk which last just a few hours and the view is stunning. Following a different path, you may reach the Baily Lighthouse propped on a hill jutting into the sea. At the end, you will arrive at the harbour where the village is located. Here it is common to see seals.

The village is really characteristic and peaceful. There are a lot of fishermen's boats and it is possible to eat fresh fish like cod and other types of fishes in one of the few restaurants around the village. I remember that I have tried baked salmon and was really tasty.

At the entrance of the village, there is also a small market which is opened every day, while during weekends and on bank holidays there are more stands also outside. Here you can find organic products, baked products, international street food and also clothes and jewelry.
After hiking and enjoying the amazing landscapes, you might have a look at St. Mary's Church and graveyard which are located in the village and walking around Howth Castle, one of the oldest occupied building in Ireland.
