Day trip from Venice: exploring Murano and Burano
17:22:00Once you have spent some days in Venice, you should dedicate at least half a day or an entire one to visit the two famous islands of Murano and Burano. I've really loved this two especially Burano, the houses are simply so beautiful. Unfortunately, it was windy and raining, not the best combo to going around and appreciate the islands.
How Burano should look like with nice weather |
There are several water buses which can take you to Murano in around 40 minutes and then it takes another 30 minutes to get to Burano. The best solution for the bus tickets is to buy a daily ticket for 20 euros. Otherwise ,a journey will cost 7 euros each and it's not convenient if you want to visit both islands.
Murano
The island is mostly famous for its glass production. There are several glass factories and shops which sell every kind of objects made of glass like jewelry, chandeliers, vases and so on. I went to a little shop to buy a pair of glass earrings and inside there was a man working and shaping glass, it was really interesting to see how it works. If the weather is not so good and you would like to learn something about the history of glass there is also a Glass Museum on the island which is nice to have a look at.
Burano
Burano is the island of lacemakers and colorful houses. Even if the weather was really bad (you can notice it from the pictures) I loved this island especially its houses painted with vivid colors like a palette of colors. Here there is no space for black and white, the only thing gray was the sky, but I can imagine how beautiful it should look like during a sunny day and blue sky. If the weather allows you take your time to explore the island by foot, visit some lace shops and try artisanal Venetian butter cookies (Bussolai) in one of the traditional bakeries.
