Even if I'm Italian I've been to Venice for the first time just last April and I felt in love with it. I've spent there three days and I think that 2-3 days are enough for having a tour around the city. If you are really passionate about art, few more days are a good solution for a more detailed visit of the museums, churches, and ancient buildings.
The best way to visit Venice is surely by foot because you appreciate it the most and you might discover hidden places.

Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri)
The bridge is one of the most notorious trademarks of Venice and it connects the Dodge's Palace to the New Prison. The name is due to a legend says that passing under the bridge the condemns sigh at the view of beautiful Venice for the last time before being imprisoned. Today, it is said that if two lovers pass under the bridge on a Gondola their love will last forever.

Gran Canal (Canal Grande)
It is Venice main canal and it is also considered the main street flowing around to the entire city. It is one of the highlights of any visit and also one of the most photographed ones. It is possible to cruise the canal by public or private waterbuses (Vaporetti) which stop in different locations.

ialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto)
Halfway down the Gran Canal, there is Rialto Bridge. It is the oldest bridge and centuries ago it was the only way to cross the Gran Canal. Near to the bridge, there is Rialto market a typical daily market with fresh products like fruits, vegetables, and fish where still today local people do grocery shopping.

Jewish Ghetto (Ghetto ebraico)
It is considered the world's first ghetto. Back to 1516, Venice's Jews were forced to move in this northwestern part of the island. Today, it is located in the Canareggio district and there you can visit the Jewish museum and some Synagogues, which are opened to the public or just take a tour of the neighborhood. There are also some restaurants and shops and it is a really nice area.

St Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco)
It’s also called the drawing room of Europe and it is the symbol of Venice. This beautiful square is an obligatory passageway and is really crowded with visitors and flying pigeons all year around. The St Mark's Basilica sits in the square and it worth a visit (it's free of charge) even if the cue could be long. The Clock Tower, the Bell Tower, and the Dodge Palace are located nearby and they are Venice's must see.
