Madragoa Café
It is a typical Portuguese restaurant and I literally loved this place. The owners were really kind and helpful. They are a couple, the wife is the one who cooks and the husband explained  to us every dishes since the menu t is written in Portuguese. Following his advice, I took a Portuguese speciality the seafood Cataplana (“Cataplana de peixe e mariscos”). Cataplana is the name of the pan where the fish is cooked, but it can be also used to cook meat for example. I highly recommend this dish because the taste was amazing, but remember to leave a space for dessert, the almond and figs pie was unforgettable.  I’ve also tasted a glass of Portuguese famous wine “Vihno Verde”, which it is perfect with fish.

A Camponesa
This is another typical Portuguese restaurant which serve mostly fish but also meat dishes. The food is really good and the price are really cheap. I took a tuna steak and I’ve tried the prawn curry with basmati rice  from my friend and the fish was really fresh and tasty. Just a quick note: remember that in Portugal they use to put in the table some bread and usually olives and cheese but it is not for free. If you want to eat that you need to pay, otherwise just leave it there.

The venue is informal and rustic,  it’s located in Barrio Alto, the heart of Lisbon night life happens, and it’s 5 minutes walking to Santa Catarina view point. Take a walk there and wait for the sunset,  then go to have dinner at Camponesa.

Mercado da Ribeira
It is the main food market in Lisbon. During the day from 6AM to 2PM on the ground floor the stalls selling vegetables, fruit, meat and other fresh product. Instead on the western side of the building from 10AM till midnight or 2AM (weekend) there are several stalls which offer a wide range of foods from seafood to pizza, hamburgers, sushi, Portuguese cuisine, and dessert. The food is really good, I’ve tried octopus and also "Arroz de marisco" - seafood risotto and they were both really tasty. The prices are a little bit higher compared with the Portuguese standards, but not excessive.

How does it work? First, you order what you want from the stall you chose and then you take your dish and have a seat in one of the canteen-style communal tables. The venue is often crowded because it is well-known especially among the tourists, but it’s easy to find a place to seat and I think it worth a visit!

Frade dos Mares
This modern restaurant serves mainly Portuguese seafood, with several octopus dishes but also meat and vegetarian ones. If you like fish, then you have to try “Polvo à Lagarerio”- it is a tradition meal with boiled octopus that then is baked in the oven with potatoes and flavours and drizzled with large amounts of olive oil. An alternative is Cod fish cooked Lagarerio style as well.

At first sight the venue could look pretentious and luxurious, but it is actually really contemporaneous and has an intimate setting and in addition the price are fair.

Kook Chiado Restaurant
This restaurant is a mix of Portuguese cuisine together with Japanese and Angolan ones. I discovered this place when I was in Lisbon with my friends because some years ago we started this kind of “tradition” which consist in having at least a sushi night when we are on holiday abroad. I only tried sushi and sashimi and the fish was so fresh. I won’t give opinions on the Portuguese dishes since I haven’t tried them. Anyway if you want to try something different and international let’s give it a try!
